Armstrong wins Michigan Idol

By day he's a mechanic, but as of last Friday night at the Bay City Pig Gig, 1990 Unionville Sebewaing Area Schools graduate Steve Armstrong has become the 2007 Michigan Idol winner.

"Someone I know had seen the flyer hanging up and they brought it to me," he said. "I decided to try out for it...and after about 12 weeks of competing I won."

The competition began a few months ago with about 20 people singing every Wednesday night for a panel of judges. The top ten were picked and proceeded to the next week of competition.

"It was great," explained Armstrong. "For the first few weeks after each competition when the top ten went on, new people were allowed to sign up...I didn't think I had a chance."

Then about four weeks before the finale at the Bay City Pig Gig, Armstrong became one of the Final Top Ten. Two days before the Friday night finale, Armstrong found out he was one of the five finalists.

Armstrong has played in bands for years and really enjoys the chance to sing and perform. Part of Armstrong's winnings included opening for country music singer Mark Wills.

"It was unbelievable," he said. "He's really just an ordinary guy."

The second part of his title includes traveling to Las Vegas for a week. "They're trying to hook me up with something (a gig) out there," he said. "I'm not sure what it is, but I'm really excited."

"It's really weird," he added. "Monday morning I woke up to go to work and I'm changing brakes on a car, but less than 24 hours ago, I was singing on a stage in front of people opening for a famous singer."

"It's back to reality I guess."

Armstrong isn't sure what will transpire in Las Vegas, but can't wait to find out.

"In the back of my mind, as a singer in a band, I've always wanted this...this is the big time shot I've wanted," he explained.
