Partial river dredging to happen

The Sebewaing River may not receive a complete dredging this year, but the Sebewaing Harbor Commission has plans to get the low spots taken care of.

"We're concentrating on the low spot located on the north end of the point," said Sebewaing Harbor Commission Chairman Chris Bolzman.

Bolzman reports the Harbor Commission has sent information to the Michigan Waterways Commission to get a partial dredging done.

"They (the Waterways Commission) have $100,000 set aside for this... and we have a contractor ready to go," said Bolzman. "We just need to get all the paperwork done and their approval."

While the Harbor Commission hasn't yet received confirmation of the dredging, Bolzman feels confident it will happen.

"We hope it'll be a go... they've (the Waterways Commission) always been helpful," he explained.

Once the Harbor Commission receives confirmation, Bolzman said the contractor, Bieri Excavating of Caseville, is ready to work. "They said it'd be a total of one month for the work...two weeks to set up and another two weeks for the dredging," Bolzman said.

"After the dredging is done there'll be a minimum of four-feet all the way out," added Bolzman. "This will be a great help."

The Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) still has money set aside from last fiscal year for a complete dredging, but without the full amount, the ACOE won't dredge the Sebewaing River.

"Until that happens, we're (the Harbor Commission) hoping this will be enough to get by with," Bolzman explained.
