Miller hails passage of defense appropriations

U.S Representative Candice Miller, known as an advocate of the military, recently applauded the passage of H.R. 3222, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act of 2008. According to a press release, Miller feels, "The legislation demonstrates strong support for our nation's defense and our troops."

She explained, "As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I am proud that the U.S. House passed this legislation, which provides the funds we need to defend our nation. By approving the annual federal funding bill, the House has also sent a strong message in support of our troops in the field."

Miller goes on to say in the release that this legislation will allow Michigan to play a "vital role" in "maintaining our nation's strength."

According to the release, 10th District projects in the legislation include:

* $1.5 million for the Air Force's MTAPP (Manufacturing Technical Assistance Production) Program for wire harnesses, which are being produced at AG Manufacturing in Harbor Beach. AG Manufacturing is one of the largest employers in Harbor Beach and provides vital services in support of the Air Force.

The Defense Appropriations bill also includes language that requires the Army to program funds for at least one more Stryker Brigade Combat Team and appropriates funds in the amount of $1.1 billion to meet this requirement, according to the release. Rep. Miller and the nine members of the Michigan delegation requested they appropriate the funds for additional brigades due to their success in Iraq.

The bill also provides a 3.5% pay raise for the military. It now moves to the Senate for passage.
