Revenues down but complaints up

Huron County Sheriff Kent Tibbitts' 2006 Annual Report shows the total revenue brought into the county is down from a year ago. However, the expenditures do seem to be coinciding with the decrease.

Much of the revenue decrease seems to be from the housing fees, work release and housing out of county prisoners, according to the report.

"Last year we did not house St. Clair County (prisoners), so that made a difference on our revenue," explained Tibbitts.

"Housing fee is down about $8,000, this is our prisoners," said Tibbitts.

He added, "As we know, last year our county was down. It is not as bad as it seems."

He said the department did receive a little boost in October of last year. At this time the department began housing Federal prisoners.

Huron County receives approximately $35 per day, per prisoner for housing costs. Recently, the jail housing numbers showed 80 prisoners in the jail, 46 of which are from Huron County and 22 prisoners from Tuscola County.

The department is also increasing exposure by adding additional contracts for enforcement within the county.

"We seem to be adding more contracts all the time, this includes the additional service to Caseville Township and Michigan Sugar," explained Tibbitts.
