Report shows crime is down, Sheriff's Department doing well



Huron County Sheriff Kent Tibbits recently presented his 2007 Annual Report to the Huron County Board of Commissioners.

Huron County crimes seem to be down, while revenue set a record for the 2007 year.

"The jail is bringing in record amounts of revenue," Tibbits said. "It is very helpful that we have the van now for transporting prisoners,"he added.

Huron County officially began last year housing federal prisoners with basically no negative incidents.

The gross revenue is up nearly $125,000, at $1,044,374, according to Tibbits.

"This is a record amount of money brought into the Sheriff's Office; the staff needs to be commended."

The Huron County Sheriff Posse continues to be active and has 25 volunteers, according to the report.

He explained, "This support group was formed in 1983 and then as is now operates with the idea of assisting local law enforcement and promoting good horsemanship in the county. They do so by meeting monthly or more often when needed. They hold training sessions and classes relating to their purpose. They strive for professionalism in the mounted unit. They make themselves available at any hour for whatever task is asked of them by any agency."

Director of Safety Education Deputy Thomas Morneau also had a busy year with the different programs within the Sheriff's Department. Those programs are focused towards school children and education and include: Safetyville, Operation Identification, Alcohol Enforcement, Kids Against Drugs and McGruff.

More than 4,000 students and more than 1,800 adults have been affected by the 267 programs conducted last year. The majority of the funding for the programs is donated by local businesses and organizations.

The Civil Division also saw increases last year. The Civil Division revenue is up approximately $14,000 at $43,694; mortgage sales were up 115 at 208.

The Marine Division logged in more than 1,600 hours that included: 13 hours on boating accidents, more than 23 hours of search and rescue, five hours on body recovery, 10 hours on boater safety, seven hours on livery inspections with a total of 211 livery boats inspected, 40 administrative hours, 140 officer training hours, 21 hours on regatta patrol, more than 98 hours on maintenance of equipment and 8,042 vehicle miles traveled.

The Community Work Program logged in an additional 546 hours making a total of 17,180 hours worked by prisoners and 12,158 miles traveled. The worked performed is estimated at $120,260 in savings to the community.

Animal Control saw a decrease in kennel inspections, down 12, and 10 less kennel licenses sold.

Total inmates booked were down 101 to 1,427 last year.

Personal injury and property damage accidents were also down last year.

The total deer accidents handled by the Sheriff's Department was 773, down 40 from 2006.
