USA students get a 'lift'

SEBEWAING -- It took almost an entire school year of training and two weeks of careful planning, but the Unionville Sebewaing Area Schools Advanced Physical Education and Strength-Training students reached their goal.

"These kids did a lot of hard work over the last few weeks," said Advanced Physical Education and Strength-Training Teacher Gary VanSumeren.

He continued by explaining that about 150 students worked on a weight-a-thon and raised enough money to upgrade the weight room.

"They had two options... they could ask people to sponsor a penny per pound that they weight lifted or they could ask for a donation."

"We had a reasonable goal of $50 per student and they all did a great job," he added.

He said some of the USA sports' teams and players donated to the cause, too.

"Every sports team here donated and helped in some way."

On May 5 and May 6, VanSumeren, Larry Houthhoofd, Josh Hahn and Isaiah Gainforth picked up the ten new machines and a variety of students assembled the equipment.

"Tyson Valentine, a graduate from this past May, spearheaded the students and I supervised the production," said VanSumeren.

The ten machines include a multi-leg machine, a shoulder press, a chest press, an arm curl, a triceps extension, a rowing machine, an abdominal machine, a leg extension, a seated lug curl and a back extension. The multi-leg machine is the only piece of equipment not inside the weight room cage.

"We didn't have enough room for the machine inside without taking away from the walking area," said VanSumeren. "I compare this room to a small scale health club or college weight room."

"We really wanted to expand on the room and add free weights," said USA Athletic Director Mark Gainforth. "The new equipment is also great for rehabilitation, too."

"All students can use the equipment," added Gainforth. "The classes have gotten bigger over the years and by adding the equipment, it helps him (VanSumeren) maximize his class capabilities."

"The kids have really taken pride in getting this room done and equipped... this entire process was about the kids," said VanSumeren.

"This is a more rounded facility now for the kids," added Gainforth.
