BASEBALL: Warriors, Pirates fall in regional finals

North Huron Warrior's season came to an end on Saturday, as they lost 3-1 to host BCAS in the D4 regional finals.

"It's a game we could have won," Warrior's coach Steve Schmidt said of some missed opportunities. "We only had four hits."

In the bottom of the sixth, North Huron had a runner on first and BCAS made a tough play and turned a double play to get them out of what could have been a big inning for the Warriors. "If that ball gets through, it goes to the alley and we score a run," Schmidt explained.

North Huron had one last chance in the seventh when they put runners on first and second, but couldn't get the hit they needed. "We needed a couple of breaks and we could have won the game," Schmidt said.

While the offense struggled at times, the pitching was stellar as Mike Nienaltowski held the Cougars to two runs in five innings of work, while Erik Dhyse allowed one score in two innings of relief. "Both pitchers pitched very well," Schmidt said of their effort.

North Huron advanced to the finals with an 11-2 win over Deckerville.

Anthony Irvine was a double shy of the cycle and capped off his hitting effort with a two run homer. Cameron Schmidt added three singles, while Erik Dhyse and Nick Peterson each chipped in two singles in the winning cause.

While this loss marks the end of the road for seniors Kurt Dhyse, Myke Schmidt and Peterson, next year still looks promising for North Huron. "We are graduating (just) three seniors and both pitchers will be back next year."

He added, "Nienaltowski is the best pitcher in the area -- no doubt. Mike has excellent control and can place the ball and can throw strikes."

"We have guys that can step in and play, so we will be tough next year."

In other games at the BCAS regional, the Harbor Beach girls lost 4-0 to BCAS in the finale. It was the first time the Pirates made it to a regional final game. Harbor Beach advanced to the finals with a 8-0 win over fellow GTE opponent Ubly.
