Are you a good listener or problem solver? Or maybe have good negotiation skills? If so, becoming a Volunteer Mediator may be an excellent opportunity for you.

Mediation is a process in which two or more people who are involved in a dispute, meet in a private, confidential setting. With the help of a neutral person, or mediator, they work out a solution to their problem.

The Human Development Commission Center for Dispute Resolution is offering a training to increase the number of available volunteer Mediators, and to provide the community with the necessary skills for conflict resolution.

In order to volunteer as a Mediator under the rules of the Michigan Supreme Court Administrative Office, an individual must successfully complete 40 hours of formal training and internship.

If you have time to volunteer, find dispute resolution interesting, and want to stand out as a leader in your community, this may be the opportunity for you.

The Mediator Training course teaches participants about conflict and its causes, communication skills, negotiation skills, legal issues, and mediation skills such as troubleshooting and neutrality.

The 40-hour Basic Mediator Skills Training class is being held June 25-29, 2007 by the Human Development Commission Center for Dispute Resolution. The deadline to register is June 18. To obtain a registration packet, please call the HDC Center for Dispute Resolution at 989-672-4044. You will receive confirmation of your registration upon acceptance of your application and determination of classroom availability.
