Art adventure is a "shore" thing

Close-to-home artists' studio tour is back

There is a good reason to stay close to home this June 21 and 22, the Thumb Artists Studio Tour puts you on the trail to 12 of the Thumb area artists' studios for less than half a tank of gas! This will be the second year for the free, 33 mile tour, which wends its way along the scenic M-25 corridor, from Port Austin to Caseville.

The over-whelming response from last year's tourists was "please, do it again!" And so, the artists from last year, plus a few new ones, will be opening their studios again from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on June 21 and 22. People taking the Thumb Artists Studio Tour will be treated to an inside glimpse of the artist at work, their original artwork for sale and light refreshments. Most artists will be doing demonstrations throughout the day.

Each stop is unique; not only in the artwork and various mediums, but also in their presentations. From quiet country farm settings, to lakeside retreats, village shops and even a garden tour setting, we can guarantee a pleasant day is in store.

The list of returning artists includes Don Bullis ( a local watercolorist), Dave Thuemmel (a wood turner), Sharron Rutz (a fabric artist), Claire Bomers Logan (a multi-media artist), Laurie Conger (a potter and ceramic artist), Ivoughn Depner (an award winning print maker), Sherri Addy (a watercolorist and artistic gardener), Bill Diller (local photographer) and Donna Martin (designs and creates original stained glass work).

For the 2008 event, new artists include Angela Hill and Helen Ranger (they have owned and operated The Haven Antiques and Collectibles in Port Austin for over 10 years), Lynne Wiencek (a popular jeweler from Port Austin) and Alice Yaroch (a master technician with stained glass).

For further information, contact Laurie Conger at (989) 738-568, or via e-mail at lconger@centurytel.net. You can also get a map of the tour by visiting the Thumb Studio Tour web site at www.thumbstudiotour.com.
