In the nightcap, Shane Kucharczyk allowed four runs in five innings to take the loss. Offensively, Kucharczyk led the team with a pair of singles. Soccer roundup: Pirates shutout Red Hawks Harbor Beach ended the regular season with an 8-0 win over Cass City. The Pirates scored their first goal when keeper Rhonda Gusa scooped up a Cass City pass and kicked it 65 yards to forward Moriah Kish. Kish beat a collection of defenders and Harbor Beach was on the board. Six minutes later, Kish swept in from the left side and sent the ball across the goal mouth to Heidi Grekowicz. Grekowicz sent the ball past the keeper for a 2-0 lead. Things quieted down for the next eighteen minutes, until the Harbor Beach offense exploded. During that stretch Kish, Missy Peterson, Stefanie Gainor had goals for the Pirates. Near the end of the half, Grekowicz scored a deflection goal on a Gainor corner kick and 45 seconds later scored in the exact same way to take a 7-0 lead.In the second half, Peterson scored with a shot from the eighteen, which was assisted by Jenny Sorenson. Gusa had three saves in goal for the Pirates, who finished league play in third place with a 6-4 record. Softball roundup: Bluestars swept by Cardinals Port Hope found themselves on the wrong end of a double header sweep as they lost 12-0, 5-0 to Kingston last week. In the opener, Kayla Gust struck out two while taking the loss. The Bluestars defense didn't give her much support as they committed four errors in game one. Kim Koglin led the offense with a single. In game two, Kayla Smaglinski suffered the setback after allowing five runs on four hits and five walks. At the plate, Gust had a hit, a walk and a stolen base, while Katie Glotzhober and Erika Gisel each added hits. Lady Pirates split with Hatchets Harbor Beach beat Bad Axe 5-3 in game one, but lost the nightcap 4-3 to split a twin bill with the Hatchets. In the opener, Brittany Braun struck out 12 and walked just one to earn the win. Jamie Talaski led the offense with two singles. In game two, Bad Axe scores one run in each the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take the lead and secure the win. Harbor Beach did not help their cause defensively, as they made five errors. At the plate, Megan Tyrell had two doubles, while Braun and Natasha Will each singled. |
