Huron County Press Sports PUBLISHED:
It has been an interesting journey for Albrecht, who was a four year player for the Lakers under coach Mark Weidman. Early on, Brittany was interested in being a midfielder, but her coach had other plans for her. "I begged Mr. Weidman to let me play center mid, but he didn't want me to at first," she said. "She started in the back as freshman playing central defender," Weidman explained. "But I saw some qualities where she could hold the ball and pass the ball, almost like a point guard in basketball, so we moved her to midfield and that is where she has stayed ever since," he added. And since making the move, Albrecht has worked hard to become a standout at that position. "She has been an absolute joy to coach and we'll miss her," Weidman said, noting that over the years, Brittany has become proficient in ball handling, distributing the ball and making quality passes. Brittany credits much of that success to her leader on the sidelines. "Mr. Weidman has been the driving force; he is always there and always encouraging me." "Coach Weidman is someone who has impacted Brittany these past four years. He has the ability to bring out the best of each of the girls that he works with," her parents added. "He has brought out a lot of confidence in Brittany that she never had before." Weidman was also a driving force behind Albrecht's decision to pursue playing soccer in college. When she arrives to campus this summer, Brittany knows she has a few areas she needs to improve at. "I need to have more endurance and better touch on the ball," she admitted. Her new coach, Kurt Hostetler, agreed. "Endurance is a big thing. It does get faster and the games are longer (45 minute halves). The pace goes up, so the endurance has to increase as well," he explained. He added, "I'm really excited to have her talent. I think she is going to be a great addition to the team. We'll be able to improve on what we started." Albrecht's freshman campaign will be the second season of the girls' soccer program, which finished 6-6 in its inaugural season. Hesston's soccer season starts Aug. 27. |
