Huron County Press Local News PUBLISHED:
Kraft is receiving this award mainly due to his assistance and work with juveniles and the law system. The Liberty Bell Award is given each year by local bar associations in conjunction with Law Day to honor outstanding citizens within the local community. The award recognizes outstanding service performed by a non-lawyer citizen who has given of his or her time and energy to strengthen the effectiveness of the American system of freedom under the law. Such service may include activities which promote a better understanding of our form of government, especially the Bill of Rights; encourage greater respect for the law in courts; educate people in the contrast between totalitarianism and freedom under law; or stimulate the deeper sense of individual responsibility to the end that citizens recognize their duties as well as their rights." Some of the criteria used in the selection includes:
"His actions have inspired and encouraged others and he has generated a greater respect for the law and courts; the Huron County Bar Association feels he is very deserving of this award." said Schumacher. She added, "He has supported the students and I really like his professional and personal philosophy, 'Student achievement is job number one.'" Kraft's nomination came from Huron County Probate Judge David Clabuesch. "He (Kraft) became involved with a couple children that are now his own children; I did assist with the adoption," said Clabuesch. "He is a catalyst for change in those kids lives. He is dynamic and the kids respond." Kraft is not only involved within his own school district, but when it comes time for a student to be in front of the Probate Court, he is there for more than one capacity. "Many of us have seen him in the Probate Court doing what he feels best to have those kids take a better and higher road," said Schumacher. Kraft is very pleased to have been chosen and he, for those that may really know him, seemed somewhat speechless in response to receiving the award. "I really don't know what to say; without question dealing with the court system in Huron County has been the best to work with; they're (attorneys and others) able to work with Judge Clabuesch and there is a realm of cooperation to help the family and children," said Kraft. He added, "I would like to say thank you to everyone, this is the highest award I have ever received. My grandmother used to tell me, 'The good Lord wouldn't give you anything you couldn't handle.'" |
