Bluestars make history at NCTL league meet



DRYDEN - The Port Hope girls made history last week, as they edged out Kingston 99-98 to win the NCTL title for the first time in school history. The Bluestars used one first place finish and seven seconds to pull off the upset over the favored Cardinals.

Port Hope got an outstanding effort from Heather Zick, who finished first in the 400 (1:06.21) and second in the 200 (30.01), while Stephanie Kelley was second in the 1,600 (6:30.38) and Kayla Iseler was second in the 800 (2:48.79). Other seconds included Allyson Koglin in the discus (97-2), Kim Koglin in the shot put (30-6) and Terra Pleiness in the 100 hurdles (19.85).

Port Hope also picked up a second in the 1,600 relay (2:48.79) due to a fine effort from the team of Pleiness, Kelley, Jodi Schulte and Iseler, which gave the team the points they needed to pull off the victory.

For North Huron, Megan Heffner led the way with multiple wins in the high jump (5-0), 100 (13.56) and 300 hurdles (52.42), while Emily Wiley added a first in the pole vault (7-4). The top finisher for the Caseville girls was Emily Kurschner, who won the 800 (2:36.07) and finished second in the long jump (13-6) as well.

On the boys side, the Warriors finished fifth, the Bluestars sixth and the Eagles eighth.

Ed Wisneski was the top finisher for North Huron, as he set a school record in the pole vault (12-0) with a second place effort, while adding a third in the shot put (40-8 1/4). Port Hope's best effort came from Ryan Schulte who finished third in the long jump (18-4).
