Pirates capture GTE crown



BROWN CITY- During the 2007 track season, as Ubly racked up another triple crown (league, regional and state titles), it was apparent that another team was emerging to challenge them for the seat on the throne.

Last week, Harbor Beach overthrew last year's champs with a dominant effort that saw them rack up 208 totals points, beating out top contenders Deckerville (138) and Ubly (87) to win the GTE title for the first time since 1999.

"They wanted to pick up where they left off," Pirate's coach Steve Linn said.

But despite the promise this team showed last year, he was still surprised by their dominance in the league meet. "I didn't expect that (to win by such a large margin)," Linn admitted. "We ended up with points that I didn't planning on getting."

The all around team effort saw Harbor Beach rack up six first and four seconds to pull of the impressive win. Jacqueline Kirsch won the 100 hurdles (16.19) and the pole vault for the Pirates, while Ali Wessels was a winner in both the 1,600 (5:43.14) and the 3,200 (12:22.25). Stephanie Blanchard added a first in the discus (98-3) and Bri Woycehoski was a winner in the 400 (1:01.74).

Second place finishers for Harbor Beach included Holly Buchholz in the 800 (2:30.1) and 1,600 (5:46.24) and teamed with Alicia Erdman, Wessels and Amanda Guza to finish second in the 3,200 relay (10:19.41).Whitney Cook was also second in the 100 (13.28) and Alicia Seltz in the 300 hurdles (51.52).

For the third place Bearcats, the 3,200 relay team of Jennifer Messing, Lyndsay White, Jennifer White and Chelsey Kubacki earned the win (10:19), while Tammy Rutkowski also finished first in the long jump (15-10 1/2). Second place finishers included Kayln Helewski in the 100 hurdles (16.60) and Lauren Peplinski in the 400 (1:03.59), as well as the 800 and 1,600 relay teams.

For the boys, Marlette finished first with 135 points, followed by Harbor Beach (113), Mayville (86), Ubly (80), Brown City (52), Deckerville (36) and Sandusky (23).

The Pirates were led by Travis Schock who won the 300 hurdles (42.52) and finished second in the 110 hurdles (15.84), while Matt Titus added a win in the 400 (53.79). Brad Mazure, Ryan Kirsch, Justin Siemen and Gabe Callender teamed up to finish second in the the 1,600 relay team (3:48.84).

The Bearcats picked up wins from Jason Kubacki in the discus (127-1) and Eric LaBuhn in the shot put (47-0), while Jason Schroeder added seconds in the 100 (11.15), 200 (23.53), 400 (53.91) and long jump (19-7 1/2).
