In the nightcap, Treiber had two more knocks, once again hitting a home run and a single. Katie Rayl was a homer away from the cycle as her three hits included a single, double and triple. Minda Martinez had three more hits (she was a combined 7-for-7 against Cass City), while Katie Schaus chipped in a pair of knocks. Later in the week, the Lady Pats won the Hemlock Tournament beating Swan Valley 11-4 in the finals. In game one, USA opened with an 8 inning, 3-2 win over Tawas. Lemere was the winning pitcher for the Patriots. In game two, the Patriots were 15-0 winners over Montrose. Katie Rayl picked up the win, while Lemere had a triple and a single at the plate and Minda Martinez added a double and a single. In the semis, USA knocked off Hemlock 6-1. Lemere was once again the winning pitcher, while Rayl, Minda Martinez and Carly Treiber sparked the offense with two hits apiece. In the championship game, Lemere earned her third win of the day while adding a pair of knocks at the plate. Rayl went 4-for-4 in the title game with a single, two doubles and a triple, while Minda Martinez added a single and a home run in the third. Along with the championship trophy, Lemere received a top pitcher award while Katie Rayl received MVP of the tournament. USA is 22-1 overall. Baseball roundup: Bulldogs knock off Bluestars Owen-Gage swept a twin bill from Port Hope 15-0, 11-1. In the opener, Devin Prich picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing just two hits in this three inning contest. Offensively, Eric Zaleski homered on the first pitch of the game and added a double and a pair of walks, Brent Reil went 3-for-3 with a double, while Kenny Brown and Nick Zaleski had two hits apiece. In the nightcap, James Hard struck out eight to earn the victory. At the plate, James was a triple short of the cycle as he had a two run homer, a double and a single in his 3-for-3 effort. Also at the plate, Grant Champagne, Justin Bauman, Justin Trupe and Prich each added a pair of knocks. Lakers sweep Reese EPBP improved to 9-8 overall and 4-4 in the GTW after a double header sweep of Reese (3-1, 10-3). In game one, Brennan Lange went 5 1/3 innings and allowed just one run to earn the win. Kyle Dubs earned the save by shutting down the Rockets for the final 1 2/3 innings. At the plate, Mark Feger and Logan Tibbits had two hits each. In game two, Craig Smith scattered 11 hits to come away with the victory. The key to the win was several timely double plays and solid defense. Justin Dubs, Lange and Tibbits had a pair of hits each, while Feger hit a key three run homer. Earlier in the week, EPBP split its league match up with BCAS, winning game one 6-3 and dropping game two 11-1. In the opener, Dubs pitched a complete game, five hitter to earn the win. Feger led the offense with four hits, while Chris Rowe added a double and one RBI. Shawn Wise chipped in a pair of hits for the Lakers. In the nightcap (a five inning game), Tibbits, Adam Chiotti, Feger and Rowe had singles for Lakers. Patriots take two from Red Hawks USA swept Cass City 5-1, 10-3 last week to improve to 12-6 overall and 6-0 in the GTW. In the opener, Matias Kraynak struck out six and scattered four hits to earn the win. Offensively, Mitch Keyes led the team with two hits, while Kelson Gettel, Kraynak, Shane Schmidt and Heath Schmidt had one hit each. In game two, Jordan Bolzman racked up seven K's en route to the win. At the plate, Tyson Valentine and Heath Schmidt had two knocks apiece, while Tim Holland and Caleb Brow each singled. Eagles drop a pair to the Warriors Caseville was outscored 29-2 by North Huron en route to a double header sweep by the Warriors. In a 19-0 loss in game one, Nathan Vogel led the offense with a pair of hits. Continued on page 16 Matt Grenke had three hits at the plate in a 10-2 setback in the nightcap. Jeremy Sprague drove in both of his team's run with a double. Soccer roundup: Lakers shutout Red Hawks EPBP remained undefeated in the GTC with an 11-0 win over Cass City last week. The Lakers got three goals each from Stephanie Maxwell and Amanda Dubey, while Brittany Albrecht and Sam Krueger added two scores each. Kaycee Damm added the other Laker score.Krueger and Natasha Sears had two helps each, while Albrecht, Shania Damm, Kate Beachy and Megan Yoder added one assist each. Later in the week at the Petoskey Invitational Tournament, the Lakers, Petoskey, and Utica Ford all finished the day with 2-1 records. Petoskey was declared the overall winner based on tournament bonus points. In the first game, EPBP lost to Utica Ford 2-1. The Laker's lone goal came from Maxwell off a corner kick from Megan Jobes. In game two, EPBP rebounded with a great second half in defeating Petoskey 2-0 with goals from Krueger and Jobes. Kaycee Damm assisted on both goals. In the final game, the Lakers finished off Greenville 2-0. Jobes Dubey both scored goals with Dubey also assisting on the score by Jobes. Ritter was "stellar in goal all day making a number of quality saves" according to coach Mark Weidman. He added, "The girls competed hard all day long; they never quit. Playing teams of this quality really brought out the best in our girls. I'm really proud of them." Softball roundup: Bulldogs improve to 9-3 After a pair of wins over Port Hope last week (4-1, 10-7), Owen-Gage improved to 9-3 in league play. In the opener, Mariah Francis earned the win on the mound, while Samantha Radabaugh had two hits and scored two runs. In the nightcap, Francis picked up her second win of the afternoon. Amanda Faist, Lauren Mandich and Katie Rhodes led the offense with a pair of knocks each. Eagles swept by Warriors Caseville dropped a twin bill to North Huron last week, losing 12-7 in game one and 6-0 in the nightcap. In the opener, Meaghan Fortsch was 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, while Tabitha Dexter was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Game two saw Brandi Jarvis go 1-for-1 with a pair of walks. Earlier in the week, the Lady Eagles swept Akron-Fairgrove 15-0, 18-9. Brittany Meissner won both games. In the opener, Amber Bieri went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, while Beth Grates was 2-for-2 with one RBI.Fortsch was the spark in game two as she reached base five times. She went 2-for-2 at the plate with three walks, while adding four stolen bases. Shana Kretzschmer added three walks, one hit and two RBI's. Lakers get swept by Cougars In softball action last week, EPBP was swept by BCAS 2-1, 9-1. In the opener, Erica King tossed a three hitter, but allowed a two-run homer in the fifth which proved to be the difference. Melissa Fritch led the offense with a double, while Haley Schulz and Whitney Damrow added a pair of singles each. King had the team's lone hit in the game two loss. Tennis roundup: Lakers earn 11th win EPBP improved to 9-0-1 in the GTC and 11-0-1 overall after wins over Harbor Beach, Cass City and BCAS last week. Against the Pirates, winners included Kevin Faupel in no. 1 singles (6-1, 6-1), Eric Turner in no. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0), Alex Ritter in no. 3 singles (6-2, 6-0) and Logan Tibbits in no. 4 singles (6-0, 6-3), as well as Cory Maust-Eric Weitzel in no. 1 doubles (6-0, 6-2), Evan Gunden-Ryan Werner in no. 2 doubles (6-2, 6-2), Marcus Maust-Kyle Post in no. 3 doubles (6-1, 6-0) and Dave Bumhoffer-Scott Mauch in no. 4 doubles (7-6, 6-3). Track roundup: Eagles compete at Kingston Invitational The Caseville track team competed in last week's Kingston Invitational with the girls finishing sixth and the boys eighth. Emily Quinn led the Lady Eagles with a win in the long jump (14-5 1/2) and second place finishes in the 100 hurdles (16.77) and the 300 hurdles (51.27). The top finish for the boys came from 400 meter relay team of Ray Phillips, Josh McLaren, Jason Shaw and Cody Sharpe who finished sixth (54.98). At the Akron-Fairgrove Invitational, Quinn finished second in the 100 hurdles (16.9), 200 (29.72), 300 hurdles (50.78) and long jump (14-1 1/2). Quinn finished sixth in the 300 hurdles (52.72) and eighth in the 100 hurdles (17.96) and the long jump (14-6 3/4) at the Hatchet Invitational. Red Hawks, Patriots compete at A-F Invitational Both Cass City and USA competed in Division One action at the Akron-Fairgrove Invitational last Friday. On the girls' side, the Lady Patriots finished third and the Red Hawks fourth. Winners for USA included Sara Turschak in the 1,600 (5:38.46), 3,200 (12:39.74) and pole vault (8-6) and Carly Treiber in the discus (112-5). Mercy Martinez was second in both the 800 (2:37.09) and 1,600 (5:48.45), as was Jessica Treiber in the shot put (32-3). For the Lady Red Hawks, their lone first came from Jennica Richards in the 100 hurdles (16.99) and was second in the 300 hurdles (50.44). On the boys' side, Cass City finished third overall, while USA was seventh. Winner for the Red Hawks were Lukas Varney in the 800 (2:07.58) and the 1,600 (4:47.43), Austin Babich in the 200 (23.03) and Chris Zawilinski in the high jump (6-3). Second place finishers included Dennis Bowen in the shot put (49-0 1/4) and Mark Koepf in the pole vault (12-0). Joel Goodwin had USA's top finish, which was a tie for third in the high jump (5-10 1/10). Lakers compete at the Hatchet Invitational The EPBP girls finished fifth and the boys 13th at last Saturday's Hatchet Invitational. Leading the way for the Laker girls was Chelsea Dubey who was first in the 100 (12.81), 200 (26.83), 400 (1:01.6) and long jump (16-11 1/2). For the boys, the top finish was from Alex Ritter who was seventh in the discus (128-11). |
