Newsweekly Local News PUBLISHED:
"We presented three witnesses and the defense presented three witnesses. The defense wanted to make the deceased as a bad person. It is hard to find anyone to say anything nice about the decedent." said Allen. "Mrs. Lassiter shot her husband in the head from 18 feet away," said Allen. He added, "She left the area of the threat, then returned with a gun to that threat. She told officers she went to get the gun to scare him." Allen explains the couple had been arguing and the word divorce came into the topic. Then the discussions presumably became heated. "The facts come out on a 27-year relationship; it's been not only verbally abusive but also physical abusive," said Allen. He added, "The threat of a divorce was a triggering effect on him; he got angry like he did hundreds of times, but this time he picked up a gun." "The result of the preliminary is not surprising," said Defense Attorney Robert Schellig. He added, "I felt we would tell her story; that is why we put witnesses on the stand." He said he feels the defense witnesses were good witnesses. "I will have to select a jury that will overlook the emotional aspect," said Allen. He added, "We do not want Huron County to be known as a killing field for disgruntled spouses." "I hope the jury will understand what happened that night," explained Schellig. He added, "I also think it is important the prosecution knows what went on about the history of this couple to reach a fair resolution of the case." |
