Huron County Press Sports PUBLISHED:
"Hershey's Track and Field Games introduces kids to physical fitness and healthy lifestyles through basic track and field events. At these games, every child is a winner," according to Hershey's Track meet information website. "We anticipate between 50 and 60 kids again this year," said Bad Axe Parks and Recreation Supervisor Rich Barker. He added, "We are currently working on registration." Barker explained they will not be able to accept registration on the day of the event. Deadline for registration is May 20, the day before the event with the department. There is no charge to enter and he encourages everyone, no matter their ability to "go for it." Boys and girls ages nine to 14 from all "Thumb area" school districts are encouraged to register. According to Hershey's, "You don't have to be the fasted runner in the world to participate in Hershey's Track and Field Games." This is a great way for youth to get outside and enjoy the day with other kids their ages and explore these events. Some of the events include: 50, 100, 200 and 400 meter dash; 4 x 100 meter relay, standing long jump and softball throw. Participants will be divided into girls and boys and by age categories. Participants can enter either two track and one field, or two field and one track event. Ribbons will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners of each event. Event winners will automatically qualify for the state finals to be held on July 11 at Holt, MI. Also for registration purposes, participants will need a copy of their birth certificate or notarized statement for registration. Comfortable clothing is recommended for each event as the weather can be unpredictable at this time of year. "We are looking for volunteers and fair weather for the event," said Barker. "It is always good to see the kids participate and it is good for the kids." Sponsors of the event include Hershey Foods Corporation, the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, Michigan Recreation and Park Association, The National Recreation and Park Association, National Association for Sports and Physical Education and the Bad Axe Parks and Recreation Department. For more information, call (989) 269-2630 or stop by the Bad Axe Parks and Recreation Department at the Bad Axe City Hall. |
