Hatchet Pete Salens allowed four runs (all in the bottom of the seventh inning) on eight hits in the opener and struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings to get the win in game one, while Tim Rader earned the save by getting the final out.
Bad Axe scored two in the fourth and four in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Joe Fischer and singles from Aaron Manenti and Nick Wehner. Jason Brown and Wehner finished the opener with two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, Rader struck out 10 and allowed just two hits and one walk en route to the complete game shutout. Brown led the offense with three hits and three RBIs (including a two run single in the top of the sixth), while Salens added a pair of knocks.
With the wins, the Hatchets improve to 6-1 in the GTW and 13-7 overall.
BCAS 6, EPBP 4 BCAS 5, EPBP 4
The Cougars broke up a tie a 4-4 tie with two in the top of the seventh to secure the win in game one. Craig Smith took the loss on the mound, while offensively Shawn Wise finished a homer short of the cycle (triple, double and single) for EPBP.
In game two, BCAS scored in bunches as they got a pair of runs in the fourth and three in the fifth. Laker Kevin Dubs suffered the setback, while Anthony Goins and Smith led the offense with two hits each.
With the pair of losses EPBP's record drops to 2-6 in the GTW and 6-10 overall.
Memphis 2, North Huron 1 Memphis 5, North Huron 2
Coming off winning the Huron County Tournament two days earlier, the Warriors dropped a double dip to the Yellow Jackets.
In game one, Mike Nienaltowski went the distance, allowing just two hits and striking out six, while taking the loss. At the plate, Nienaltowski added a single.
In game two, Anthony Irvine homered, while Erik Dhyse added two singles, Nienaltowski a double, Cam Schmidt a double and Kurt Dhyse a single.
The losses dropped North Huron's record to 11-3 in the NCTL and 15-5 overall.
Ubly 5, Sandusky 4 Ubly 5, Sandusky 3
Zac Tyll earned the win in the opener for the Bearcats, as struck out four and scattered seven hits. In the nightcap, Jordan Kaufman picked up the "W," allowing three runs on four hits.
"We were in two tough/competitive ballgames and the boys persevered," coach Jim Becker said. "I was pleased to see us get things done when we needed to."
With the wins, Ubly improved to 7-0 in the GTE and 10-5 overall.
Thursday, May 8 Bad Axe 4, Vassar 3 Vassar 9, Bad Axe 4
In game one, Joe Fischer improved to 2-0 as he allowed three runs and four hits in six innings of work for the Hatchets.
Bad Axe scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete the comeback, as Jason Brown singled, Fischer sacrificed him to second and Tim Rader hit a pinch hit double, which scored Brown. Rader stole third and the next to batters were intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a force at any base.
The next batter flied out for Bad Axe, but the winning run came home when Pete Salens walked on a full count pitch to force in a run.
Nick Wehner had two hits and scored twice for the Hatchets, while Chris Smith had a single and two RBIs.
In game two, three Bad Axe errors led to five runs for the Vulcans in the fourth, which proved to be the difference. Smith had two hits for the Hatchets, while Brown had a single and two RBIs.
Bad Axe is 14-8 overall.
Caseville 6, Akron-Fairgrove 5 Caseville 3, Akron-Fairgrove 0
In the opener, Justin Avalos struck 13 and allowed four runs in five innings of work, while adding two hits and two RBIs at the plate. J.C. Witherspoon also contributed a pair of hits for the Eagles.
In the nightcap, Caseville's Tim Schafer allowed just two hits and struck out eight, while Matt Grenke led the offense with two hits.
Reese 5, EPBP 4 Reese 4, EPBP 3
Justin Dubs and Chris Rowe each doubled for the Lakers, but it wasn't enough as EPBP couldn't muster enough offense to overcome the Rockets. Craig Smith took the loss on the mound for the Lakers.
In game two, Alex Jobes and Smith had hits for EPBP, while pitcher Kevin Dubs suffered the setback.

In game one, Zac Tyll picked up the win as he struck out 12 and allowed just three hits. At the plate, Grant Pichla and Justin Cleary had two hits each.
In the nightcap, Jordan Kaufman got the victory, while adding a pair of hits on the mound. Adam Glaza also chipped in a pair of hits for the Bearcats.
