"We've always had nice waterways here in Huron County, but this is a great way for people to discover what we really have to offer," said Tip of the Thumb Heritage Water Trails Committee Member Al Kleinknecht. "We're having this weekend to show people the launches around the county and how much fun getting outdoors is."

The weekend event includes kayaking, a Poker Run, tours of local museums, kite building and entertainment.

On Saturday the day kicks off with breakfast, the Poker Run (weather permitting), kayaking with the East Coast Paddlers, a Geocaching demonstration and safety demonstrations.

"There's something for everyone," adds Kleinknecht. "The kids can build a kite, then they can fly it."

At 4 p.m. on Saturday, guests are invited to watch a stunt kite demonstration sponsored by Toy Crossing of Harbor Beach. At 5 p.m. there's an All-You-Can-Eat Chuck-Wagon Water Trail BBQ and for evening entertainment at Bathing Beach guests are treated to a Bluegrass/Country Gospel concert by the "Cotton Pickin' Singers."

"The Water Trail is for all non-motorized watercrafts," said Board of Directors member Chris Boyle. "Anything like kayaks, canoes and rowboats are welcome."

"There's so much in Huron County for people to visit and see," he adds. "With the water trail we're trying to make the water a known destination."

Boyle said the committee is in the process of putting up signs in the water to direct trail users.

"This way people will know where they are and where they should go."

The trail is from Harbor Beach's White Rock Park around the tip of the thumb to Sebewaing's VFW.

In a press release, the water trail is described as being developed so trail users can easily connect with the beauty of the lake and shoreline.

Boyle expects Tuscola County to join and extend the current trail an additional 13 miles.
