Lady Bearcats win USA tri-meet



The Ubly girls had little trouble picking up the win in a tri-meet last week, beating out second place USA 81-71, while the Cass City girls were a distant third (16). The Cass City boys cruised to a win with 74.5 points, while the Ubly boys were second (53.5) and the USA boys third (44).

For the Lady Bearcats, top individual efforts included Kayla Kubacki who finished first in the 400 (1:04.05) and the long jump (15-11), while Lyndsay White won the 800 (2:39.38). Collectively, Ubly swept the relay events.

The Lady Patriots were led by multiple wins from Abby Scharf in the shot put (32-6) and discus (90-2); Sara Turschak in the 1,600 (5:41.58) and the pole vault (8-6); and Zoey Wissner in the 100 (13.5) and 200 (28.8). USA also got first place efforts from Mercy Martinez in the 3,200 and Mary Canfield in the high jump (4-6).

On the boys' side, Ubly got a majority of their points off of the efforts of Jason Schroeder and Eric LaBuhn. Schroeder picked up wins in the 100 (11.45), 200 (23.82), 400 (53.48) and the long jump (20-1 1/4), while LaBuhn won the shot put (46-4) and the discus (118-5).

The Patriots earned three first place wins including Joel Goodwin in the 110 hurdles (15.95), Tyler Kuhl in the 300 hurdles (44.63) and the 400 relay team (48.27).

Hatchets sweep Sandusky

Both the Bad Axe boys and girls team cruised to easy wins in a dual meet against Sandusky last week with the boys winning 119-35 and the girls 103-51.

For the Hatchets boys, first place winners included Brandon Baranski in the shot put (38-6) and discus (102-3 3/4), Corey Hewens in the 300 hurdles (47.52) and high jump (5-8), Allen Ireland in the 100 (11.97) and 200 (25.87), Nathan Salcido in the 3,200 (11:22) and the pole vault (10-6), Chanz Vincent in the long jump (18-4 1/2) and Martin Wolschlager in the 110 hurdles (18.66). Bad Axe also swept the relay events.

For the girls, Kati Essenmacher won the 100 (13.88), 200 (29.42) and long jump (14-8 1/2), while Taylor Breault added wins in the shot put (28-1) and discus (81-9). Ashley Volk picked up a win in the pole vault (7-6), while the Hatchets also picked up wins in the 100 hurdles, the 400, the 400 relay, the 800 relay and 3,200 relay.
