Sheriff responds to controversy

"I was elected to serve the citizens of Huron County as the Sheriff. As Sheriff, I strive to be there for our citizens at all times.

"I traveled out of state recently on a personal trip with my county vehicle. I paid for my own gas on the trip. I felt this was appropriate. I was in contact with my office several times each day while I was gone. I was able to make decisions and do my job effectively during this period that I was away.

"There has been some criticism of my use of a county vehicle. I have always tried to be open and above board as your Sheriff. I guess looking back, I should have given more thought to this, maybe talking to the Board of Commissioners first. I enjoy living and working in a small community. I get instant feedback on how I'm doing. I do appreciate it, even if it's a bit painful at times. I take my job serious and work hard to protect the citizens of Huron County.

"I plan to reimburse the county for whatever they determine is fair. I did not believe the use of the vehicle violated any rules of the county or my employment."

-- Huron County Sheriff Kent Tibbits
