Sheriff Kent D. Tibbits reports on Wednesday, Mar. 14, at approximately 10 p.m., a federal prisoner assaulted a Huron County Jail Corrections Officer after complaining he didn't feel well and needed medical attention.

In a press release Tibbits said aid was rendered to the assaulted corrections officer by two other on duty correction officers and a road patrol sergeant. Two of the correctional officers were treated and released from the Huron Medical Center for injuries received during the assault.

"They had minor injuries and were later released," said Tibbits.

"This was an isolated incident and safety measures are in place to deal with these types of situations," he adds.

"Our current policies and procedures are being reviewed for any additional safety improvements that could be made at this time."

"This is an ongoing investigation and there may be federal and local charges to file against the inmate," he adds.

The inmate is a federal prisoner being housed in the Huron County Jail.

"We have inmates coming from other counties to be housed here for revenue purposes," said Tibbits.

The Huron County Jail has 70 beds and Tibbits reports last week 64 of those beds were being used, with nine of them occupied by federal prisoners.

"This is a way for us to get revenueÉwe try to keep the facility full."

Tibbits reports the prisoner is still incarcerated at the jail and the federal authorities are involved in the investigation.
